Ballet - a core form of dance, which can trace its history back to the 16th century.
With a long physical history, Ballet focuses on precise and physically demanding
dance movement that serves the dancer well in any dance form pursued.
Pointe - the most demanding form of ballet in which the dancer lifts up onto
the very tips of the toes. Physically, a dancer should not attempt this form of ballet
until 1) the bone formation of the foot is complete, 2) the dancer's musculature is
trained and 3) instruction is under the guidance of an advanced teacher.
Jazz - like the musical form it is named after, jazz dance uses the complexities
of rhythmic syncopation and translates it into isolated movement of the torso and
limbs. Like ballet, jazz technique emphasizes body alignment, coordination, strength,
flexibility, control, and adds its own sense of musicality and rhythmic sophistication.
Hip Hop- this is the high energy pulsating popping, locking, gliding, freestyle and
floor work seen on rap videos..This is the performance and social dance of our age.
This is a great way to light the fire of dance in the heart of those 8 to 14 year olds who have never danced. This is the modern connection of dance with the
young soul.
Modern - this dance form is the logical follow up to ballet, expanding the
horizons of what is "proper" for the world of dance when ballet is the jump off point.
Exploring movement and inner connections, modern dance studies the dynamics
of energy, physical and inner, and how it supports and motivates all of movement.
Lyrical- this refers to a more fluid and graceful type of jazz dance. However many
times balletic movement can be the foundation of basic movement. One might
think of this as the ballad form of contemporary performance dance.
Tap - the most rhythmically sophisticated of all dance. Invented and developed in
America, it uses metal plates on the dance shoe to create intricate rhythms. There
are two major branches, show tap and rhythm tap. As the names imply rhythm tap
is fully focused on the rhythm, where the dancer is really another musical instrument. Show tap is more involved with tap dance as it is used in musical theater.
Combo-Classes- these are classes for the 3 to 5 year olds. They combine two
different styles of dance into one class time. The advantage is exposure to more
than one dance style. The disadvantage is that usually the different dance styles
require different shoes and some of class time is lost to simply changing shoes.
Tiny Tutu Tots- this is the class for baby dancers, the 3-year-old girls and boys. If there is ever a sight of joy, it is a class of very young children exploring the world of artistic movement.
